TSG192: Wood Grain!

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Good morning! Did you all enjoy all the sneak peeks last week? As I pinned them to the TSG Pinterest boards, I was just in awe of the talent on this team! So many awesome cards and ideas all in one place! I can't begin to tell you how much I love being on this team!! *sigh*

Have you checked out this week's TSG challenge TSG192? Trendsetter Tracy MacDonald has challenged us to use wood grain in any form on our card or 3D project. I had watercolored some wood grain to the snowglobe card I made last week and had such a good time doing it, so I thought I'd do it again and share with you exactly how I did it!

I love how this card turned out! And I especially love how my woodie pickup truck turned out!

I used the On The Move set and this week's Retro Sketches #48 for my layout.

I'm pretty sure it's a heck of a lot easier to create wood grain with Copic markers but it's not all that difficult with reinkers and an aqupainter brush either. To start, I added a wash of brown ink (Soft Suede). Then I added more ink to the areas that I wanted the shadows to be (on the left and right hand corners of the side panel). Then, because I needed my brush as dry as possible, I continued to color the rest of the image, until it was quite dry. Then I dipped the tip of the brush into the brown ink and added streaks across the panel to represent grain. To make it a little more realistic, you need to add some 'knots' to the grain. To do this, just sketch some eye-shaped ellipses to the grain. And that's it! If you're really uncomfortable with it, I suggest practicing on some scrap paper before you try it on your image. Let me know if you give it a go! I'd love to see your work!

If you want to join us this week, here are the deets you need to know:

To be eligible for the giveaway, create a card or project using this challenge, and then come back to the TSG Blog to add your name and a link to your project in the InLinkz that is located at the bottom of this challenge post. This challenge is open until the winner has been announced on the following Monday (February 4th). The winner will get a $5 gift certificate to use in the TSG Web store!

By participating in this challenge, you may also find yourself in the Trendsetting Spotlight that shines on the TSG Blog every Thursday. We will be on the lookout to find challenge cards that stand out and show Trendsetting qualities. TSG stamps are not required to participate in the challenges but are appreciated :)

You do not need to have a blog to be able to participate in the TSG Challenges! You can simply add the URL link from your project after it has been uploaded to your online craft gallery. If you upload your card to an online craft gallery, please use the keyword TSG192 so we can check out your beautiful work!

I hope you can play along this week!
